Ultrasound

Tuesday 2nd March 2004 - 12:29:21 PM

151 lbs, 20 weeks, belly 8″

Today we got to see baby McPherson with the ultrasound. The baby must
have heard us talking about not wanting to know if he is a boy or girl,
because he dutifully kept his legs crossed for the sonogram and stayed
curled up in a little ball. This did make it a challenge for the
technician to examine all the things on her checklist: kidneys, brain,
heart, bladder, spine, but that just meant we got to watch for longer.
The baby seemed quite content just curled up resting on my bladder
waving and kicking. They printed out a couple photos for us to keep,
but even better, Frank brought in our video camera and filmed the
event.

Then we met with the doctor who confirmed that everything looked good
(we’re actually two days ahead of schedule size-wise). I also learned
that the reason I’ve had a hard time kneeling and bending my legs is
because I have twice as much blood in them. Maybe I should practice
doing headstands to get the blood flowing (I did see instructions for
this in my yoga during pregnancy book).

Then the doctor announces that she’s going on sabbatical for June and
July and won’t be around to deliver baby McPherson. I hope I didn’t
sound too nonchalant about the situation, but we really haven’t been
impressed with her. It all started when she couldn’t explain blood
types to us. Then, when I broached the subject of natural childbirth,
her only remark was “oh, sounds painful.” So, we had already begun our
search for a more supportive doctor. In fact, we’re already signed up
to tour a different hospital this Sunday.

I should also explain a new feature of the blog . . . the belly
measurement. It is the measurement of my uterus from a certain bone (in
the bikini area) to the top. Right now, the top of the uterus is at my
belly button, but by the end it will be at my ribcage.
