Babywearers

Elizabeth has had a lot of firsts in the past week. She went to her
first bar, first wine tasting and first trip to the dentist. For all of
these firsts, she didn’t care where she was as long as she was in her
baby sling, which we now refer to as her womb with a view.

It’s amazing that the sling hasn’t caught on with more parents. People
are always marveling at it like it’s something new, which is strange to
me because the baby sling predates all the modern plastic contraptions.
What’s more basic than just tying the baby to yourself with a piece of
cloth? In Africa I saw a 5 year old carrying a 2 day old this way.

There’s actually a term for this activity: babywearing. It’s a little
hard to think of Elizabeth as an accessory, but term does fit. So,
Elizabeth gets worn a lot. The dentist was amazed at how well-behaved
she was in her sling as I got my teeth cleaned. She only made one peep
at the wine tasting, but I couldn’t blame her after seeing the dirty
diaper she had.

At first I worried about using the sling too much-will she grow tired
of it? will she be to dependent on it? Then I did some research on
babywearing and found that because they are attached to you rather
than watching you from afar, the studies say they’ll become more
independent later in life. So, Io feel a little less guilty for owning two babyslings.

Here’s a link to a picture of the sling:

The sling is just as popular with Elizabeth as ever, though she may like being propped up in it more than sleeping it in now. Everywhere we go, people say, “Oh, they didn’t have those things when I had little ones,” or some variation of same. I finally figured out what to say in response!

“Actually, people have been using these for thousands of years, ot’s just you couldn’t buy them in Target until recently.”
