Nursing Bras
This week I finally got around to ordering new nursing bras. Nursing bras are particularly hard to come by, and the ones that you can find in big box stores are definitely not for long-term wear. I love walking into Victoria’s Secret and asking them if they carry nursing bras–partly because I like the look on the clerk’s face and partly because I want them to know there is a demand for them (however small).
Back when I was pregnant and buying nursing bras, I never thought I would be wearing them for two years! In all my preparation for childbirth, I hadn’t really looked into what happens afterward – like nursing. I remember telling my OB on my post-delivery checkup that “I plan to nurse for 6 months, but I haven’t really done much reading on the subject.” Her only comment was “OK”, missing an opportunity to educate me that the American Academy of Pediatrics recomments nursing for at least 1 year. (I’m sure I’ll have a special entry on Dr. Christie later.)
Determined to get rid of my generic nursing bras, I googled “nursing bra.” Strangely, the first hit was a photo of Katie Holmes with her nursing bra exposed. I wonder how many times the FedEx guy has witnessed this same scene in homes throughout America? I’ve run to answer the door several times with my bra undone, but in the T-shirts I wear you can’t really tell. When I leave the house, I usually remember to check, but there are times when I’ve returned home and noticed I’d forgotten. Fortunately, I’m not famous and nobody was around to photograph it for the world.
I did manage to find some nice looking bras at motherwear.com which will be a big improvement. I’ll let you know how they are–and if Frank approves.
