All-American Toddler
Last night, Elizabeth attended her second baseball game. It was the annual Janus Research Group night at the Greenjackets game. (Her first game was at last years JRG night.) I was a bit worried about how long we would get to stay when Elizabeth barely sat still long enough to eat a few bites of hotdog at the pre-game cookout. She thought running around peering down from the deck on the players warming up was much more fun.
When the game started we managed to keep her fairly well occupied by explaining the game, cheering and snacking. We would take periodic walks to the bathroom, to get ice cream and peek at Auggie, the Greenjackets mascot. After watching the long line of kids getting Auggie’s autograph and giving him hugs, she mustered up the courage to walk up to him and wave to his back and say “Hi Bee!” — from about 10 feet away.
Somehow we managed to stay till the end of the game (9:30); the Greenjackets beat the Hickory Crawdads 5-4. We were treated to a post-game fireworks show, which was surprisingly good. Frank and I oohed and ahhed at the fireworks to show her how fun they are. After several minutes of this, we looked down and Elizabeth was fast asleep. Apparentlly, she wasn’t scared of the noise and wasn’t terribly impressed at the display. I guess we won’t be going out of our way to make sure she sees 4th of July fireworks!
