First trip to the Dentist

Sunday 16th July 2006 - 4:55:46 PM

Elizabeth went to the tooth doctor yesterday for the first time. I’d noticed a dark spot on one of her front teeth and decided to have it checked. All day we talked about how things were going to work at the dentist. She would sit in the chair and open her mouth really wide and say ahhhh, and the dentist would look at her teeth.

I was a bit nervous about how things would go because the appointment was at 2:00. Naptime.

It turns out I needn’t have worried. Elizabeth walked right into the office, climbed into the chair and immediately opened her mouth. The dentist was a bit surprised at how brave she was — I’m sure he’s had his share of uncooperative toddlers.

The visit went fine – except for the fact that she does have caries (spots of cavities). The dentist told us to cut down on how often she eats. This is easier said than done since toddlers are huge snackers because they rarely like to slow down to eat a meal. We’ll have to see how it goes. I did learn that chocolate isn’t so bad for teeth because the fat coats the teeth and it’s chunky enough that it doesn’t linger in the mouth. Elizabeth was glad to hear that the only candy she eats isn’t off-limits.

The next step is getting the cavities fixed…
