Sickness Descends

Sunday 16th July 2006 - 5:00:24 PM

The only thing worse than being sick yourself is having a sick baby. Elizabeth started throwing up at 4 am the other morning and didn’t stop until over 48 hours later — I’m crossing my fingers that since she hasn’t thrown up in 8 hours that she’s getting better. We took two trips to the doctors office, but both times they said she looked “good.” This is doctor-speak for her not being dehydrated enough to need an IV in the hospital. Each time they sent us home telling us to keep giving her fluids and make sure she is wetting diapers. I think we were able to keep her hydrated since she still nursed a bit.

It wasn’t a pretty site around here on Tuesday. I was also puking. At times we were both puking in the same bucket at the same time. Hey, I said it was bad.

Luckily, we had Frank to take care of us. He set up the aerobed in the bedroom so Elizabeth and I could sleep on a waterproof bed with a bucket on the floor next to us.  The animals didn’t know what to make of the situation — who knew humans could sleep more than cats?

Frank ended up getting a milder form, leaving us to wonder if we would need to postpone our trip to Bel Air, MD. Frank gave the go-ahead to start packing Friday night. I whipped out my suitcase and started gathering clothes.

As it turns out, Elizabeth was not quite through with her stomach bug. She decided to sit in my suitcase and play with the buckle. Then, suddenly, she starts to throw up (after a 24+ hour break) inside my suitcase!

We did end up leaving the next morning, leaving the suitcase behind to air out. Yuck!

Also, when the doctors said to “keep giving her fluids,” the part Andrea didn’t mention was that this started out as one teaspoon every five minutes and was supposed to work up from there, basically as much as she could handle. At first sipping Pediasure from a teaspoon seemed to entertain her, but of course that didn’t last long. Luckily no one got sick enough to need an I.V.!
