The Pretender

Elizabeth has become immersed in pretend play. As I type this, she is nursing a bottle of handsoap and covering herself with a hand towel. I had the honor of holding the bottle of soap, but apparently picked it up upside down and was immediately corrected, “No, this way.”‘

I read an article on pretend play that talks about how toddlers will reenact things that happen in their daily lives. It helps them to process what goes on in their world. It’s interesting how important pretend play is in their development.
Elizabeth has gone on many car trips in the living room using a roll of landscape fabric as her car. She does have a difficult time getting her baby to sit in the back seat though. When she’s pretending with her dolls, she’ll often refer to herself as Abby’s mommie. “Abby’s mommy is eating cereal.” The funniest was when she walked into the cat-box-room with no shoes on (she’s supposed to wear shoes in there). I said “where are your shoes?” She replied, “I have pretend shoes on.” I wasn’t sure how to respond to that one!
