Dairy Free

Elena is the princess of spit-up. When she spits up it sounds like hic-SPLAT as a large pool of watery milk projects out of her little mouth and hits anything in its path–usually me. Lately, it is enough to cover an area on the floor at least a square foot around. Some days I feel like a contestant on a kids gameshow on Nickelodeon as I dodge splats of spit-up. The most exciting one was when she was having a quick snack before going to church. Hic-SPLAT! All over me and her. The only clothing article to escape getting wet was my bra and her diaper. Then there was the one she had in the Moby wrap that went right down my chest.

I haven’t been worried about this too much because she’s been gaining weight and is otherwise happy, but yesterday I had a few cappuccinos and she had two big spit-ups. Now I’m wondering if she has a hard time digesting the cow milk proteins that make their way through the breastmilk. The only way to test this is going dairy-free for 10 days.

This will definitely be a challenge because at some point during the last trimester, I switched from wanting to puke at the scent of coffee to making myself a cappuccino every morning. I guess I’ll be getting down the coffee pot again!
