Little Baby = Big Scene

Elena may be little, but she can sure cause a scene. We girls were in a pizza joint refilling our beverage when “hic SPLAT!” Elena spit up all over the floor. It had been awhile since she’d had one of her mammoth spit-ups, so I was caught off guard. Fortunately, she didn’t spit up on anyone or hit any body’s food. It mostly splatted on the floor. I made Elizabeth stand next to it to prevent anyone from stepping in the pool of spit-up while I searched for napkins. A younger guy started handing me wads of paper towels and I mopped it all up. I just wonder what the guy was thinking. I realized that it might not have been the smartest move to nurse Elena then put her Indian-style into the sling. She might have been a bit too scrunched up.

The next incident happened in church on Sunday. I can count on my hands the number of times Elena has gotten the hiccoughs. Two of those times have been in church. Now, I know to take a baby out for crying or for cooing too loudly, but do you remove a baby from church for hiccoughing? This is uncharted territory.

This Sunday, she was hiccoughing along and there was a sudden silence in the service. The whole church could hear her, causing a wave of giggling and glancing around for the mini-culprit. Afterwards, people enjoyed coming up and asking if she was the one with the hiccoughs in church–even the minister asked! It was a bit embarrassing that the whole church could hear, but if a small baby sitting in the back of the church can be heard, then poor acoustics should share the blame. It’s a good thing we’ve been leaving the sanctuary to nurse! If the congregation could hear the hiccoughs, then they would probably hear Elena’s gulping too–that might have been a bit more embarrassing!
