Small Victories
Augusta is NOT a crunchy place. There are so few breastfeeding, baby-wearing, cloth diapering, cosleeping, whole foods eating mamas here, that I definitely don’t fit in a lot of times. I usually find myself strolling away when the conversation topic turns to which formula makes Junior gassey or which store has diapers on sale or when her baby will be induced. The usual exception to this is when I’m with my La Leche League friends who know the difference between a probiotic and an antibiotic.
I had a small “crunchy” victory last week when Elena and I made the front page of the Columbia County News Times with Elena in her sling. I actually got a phone call from someone who saw the picture and was interested in buying a sling! (Here’s a link to the story–we’re photo #2)

The slings are so rare around here, that I’ve started selling mine. People kept asking me where to get one, so I tweaked my pattern and now I’m selling them out of the trunk of my car! We walked into a restaurant and someone said “where can I get one?” to which I replied “I just happen to have some in my car.”
Yesterday, we were at the neighborhood pool for Elizabeth’s swim lesson when one of the moms asked if Elena was wearing a cloth diaper. Usually their response when I say yes is “isn’t that a lot of trouble?” Instead, this mom whipped out a wool diaper cover she was knitting!
Maybe there will be enough crunchiness in Augusta to get a Whole Foods soon!

I always get comments (positive ones!) about slinging when we’re in Augusta visiting my parents. It’s funny because most people around here (near Seattle, WA) have seen slings often, but in Augusta it’s like some crazy new thing. I’m hoping I can help with getting crunchiness more common once we move there!
I really hope Trader Joe’s will come to Augusta sometime… they are so inexpensive! Earth Fare reminds me of TJ’s, but EF is so much pricier. The food there costs the same as food in WA does and the cost of living here is much higher. We had a TJ’s right down the street from our house when we live in CA and it was wonderful!
